Birthday Wishes
to rebcakeand snickfic! I hope you both had a wonderful day. I was planning on writing a little something for each of you, but work has taken me away from fic the last few days. I'll owe you one. *wink*

In other news, I haven't checked my flist in about 3 days since work's been keeping me busy and I've been out in the evenings, so if there's anything I missed or you think I'd enjoy, feel free to drop a link. I'm planning to make three posts tonight or tomorrow - I finished S1 of True Blood, so there will be thoughts. I've been meaning to plug the upcoming Ken Burns documentary on PBS this weekend on the National Park system and will post a few pics of me at the ones I visited on my roadtrip. I also have been meaning to compile a list of fics that feature or include in some capacity menstruation, either in sex or as an actual plot point. urania_calliopemade a post about this recently and I've been meaning to impart some thinky thoughts on the matter. I can only think of a few stories off the top of my head with this sort of content, so if you know of any now, start dropping links. I'd like to make as comprehensive a list as possible.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, dahlink! The day's still young, out here! Festivities are still in the future.

The main fic I can think of with menses is Herself's Bittersweets, where it's an on-going and natural part of life. I know there's at least two others, but my link organization...isn't. I think it's an amazing way to go at the whole "vampire" orientation.

Absolutely. When I was college, I did a whole unit on purity and pollution and, of course, menstruation and all its associated taboos were front and center. I dont think I was as pissed off about any other issue of gender, femininity and bodily function as I was about the attitudes (specifically religious) and cultural "protectives" that were created to marginalize and control the process.

Bloodplay in fic is really interesting for me because it can cover and be used to explore a number of issues, including vampire identity, demomhood and hunger; the importance and symbolism of blood; gendered attitudes about menstruation - and often their overthrow if vampires are involved; death vs. life; and the cyclical nature of the process.

Anyway, more thinky thoughts in an actual post about this, for there are many stewing in my brain.

Thanks for the Herself shout out. I'm trying to find specific fics or chapters that deal with the theme, so I'll need to do a bit of scouring to figure out which one of her fics explores it. I do distinctly remember that "Where They Are To Take You In" has a great Angel/Jem bloodplay scene toward the end.

I'm quite surprised how many fics I was able to find, too. Eliminated the straight up PWPs, since they had no redeeming value and said nothing about the characters or the subject material at hand, but I bet we can collectively come up with a lot more!

The very first chapter of "Where They Have to Take You In" is the once I always think about, where Spike and Buffy are having marital problems, but the menstruation has been a constant link for them.

Awesome! Thank you. It's been included on the listy. That thing took me nearly a full day to make. No easy task since my LJ formatting has been weird and prone to temper tantrums for over a year. *loves your icon*

There is a one chapter story by pattyanne called "Delicacies For The Undead" featuring menstruation. http://spikeluver.com/SpuffyRealm/viewstory.php?sid=2293

Thanks for the link. I did some serious scowering of the Internets last night and was able to come up with a decent list, so far. It'll be encouraging to see how many more we can come up with when I post the list.

Aw, thank you!

*warm fuzzies*

I ran across a Spike/Tara fic that involved menstrual blood, but it was over a year ago and I haven't the foggiest where I saw it. Sorry.

No worries :)

I came up with a not-too-shabby list last night of about 18 fics. There were a few more I found, but were so unapologetically PWP with poor characterization and nothing of interest that I left them off. Will post shortly. Though who knows if anyone will see it. Weekend = land of dead LJ.

Psst. Was the Spike/Tara fic Quick and Bitter, Slow and Sweet by missmurchison?
Snicksnickfic on September 26th, 2009 11:12 pm (UTC)
Yes! Good call. I'd long since forgotten pretty much the entire gist of it, but I do recall the almost-schizophrena.
