On a more personal note, I pretty much flipped out of the other day when I was informed I am one of ten finalists for the Religion Newswriters Association Chandler Award. This is a national competition that awards excellence in news coverage of religion to undergraduates and graduate students, so it's a pretty big deal. What's better is 5/10 finalists are at the graduate level. Winners will be announced in two weeks, which is beyond exciting since this tenatively what I'd like to do for a living. If I do win anything, I'll post a link to a few of my articles if anyone is curious to see what sorts of things I write outside of the world of fanfiction.
Lastly, in an hour and a half I'm going down to West 4th to collaborate with the reporter for the lead story of the Conde Nast Intenrship Magazine. We had to pitch story ideas, and although mine were rejected, the editor in chief asked if I would like to be an assisting reporter on the lead story. I will get a byline and everything, so that was a resounding yes!
After two weeks of stressful work, yesterday I hopped the Long Island Railroad with two girls I'm living with next year and their friend and went out to Jones Beach for a day in the sun. It was spectacular. It only takes an hour to get there from Penn Station between the LIRR and the bus. Round trip the transportation costs a mere $17.50. I got quite a bit of color despite the 30 SPF I slathered on and only a little sunburn on my neck and at my hairline where it was pulled back. My boyfriend met up with us later and we decided to brave the incredibly rough surf. It was raining like mad in the city while we were there, so the waves were cresting well above our head. It was cold, cold, cold, but we stayed in for at least 20 minutes. A thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing day, indeed. I would definately do it again!
