My computer has not been well for sometime and I think it might have hit the big one today. Last night my wireless connectivity was spotty and every few minutes it would drop out and then return for a short period of time. More worrisome, however, was that I kept getting alerts that it was not registering my AC power adapter and vascillated between running on battery vs. power. The adapter was working fine. I even moved it to two different outlets to check. It must be something with the laptop itself. When I went to open it this morning, I got a message saying that the battery was low and then it immediately shut off. A few more attempts to power up also resulted in failure.

Has anyone had this problem before? I have a Dell Inspiron 600m. It's about 3 years old. I had no prior problems with it until maybe 8 months ago when it began to overheat quickly and run slow. I thought it was a memory issue and was looking to buy some more of it, but I think it's safe to say my laptops sickness goes beyond that.

I'm fairly confident that all my writing is safe and sound on the harddrive, but I still feel a slight amount of panic because I a) can't access it at the moment, and b) haven't backed up my computer since June. I have a lot of new fic material on there that I would hate to lose.

Can anyone help? *bites nails*

I'm so sorry I can't help, only commiserate. I have a small shrine on my desk to the Angry God Which Lives in the Computer and make small offerings in the name of AVG internet security, but I've been known to promise a virgin-in-a-volcano when things get really desperate. I shall light a candle in your honor. Good luck!

Thanks. At least I can use my parents computer while I try to sort out what's going on with my laptop.

*lights some incense and draws up the legal papers for the soul of my first born* Perhaps my humble offering will appease the computer gremlin?

I can't really tell what's wrong from your post, but I do know that battery life decreases dramatically after the first year (it's chemistry lol). Mine got to the point where it would only last 5 minutes without AC power -- I called Dell and they said they only cover battery issues for the first year and after that, you're on your own.

Also, I used to have this problem a lot with my AC adapter: there would be nothing wrong with the power cord or the actual adapter brick (like, the green light would be lit), but the part that connected to my laptop would get a little frayed (on the inside) from too much movement so power would not be delivered to the laptop. That problem is definitely fixable for free if you're still under warranty. I've had mine replaced like five or six times. LOL!

Alas, I'm not under warranty anymore, so it's all on my dime. But I did poke around Dell's support site today and found some diagnostics to try. When my dad gets home we'll see if we can figure out the problem. It's entirely possible that I might have to prepare this ones funeral pyre though.

At least the bastard didn't crash five months ago. Then I really would have been screwed! Bye bye thesis *cackles*

I've had this problem and it was the part of the charger (sorry, don't know the word, could be thought of as the plug) which is inserted to the laptop.

Yup. I think you're right. I've ordered another battery (which went caput) and the charger. Should be here in a few days. Hopefully that will fix the problem. I also bought a cooling unit yesterday for the heat problems that worked really well.
