The sky is grey when he opens his eyes, the first rays of sun pressing through the blinds. He watches the triangle of light against the wall grow minutely. It means the world hasn’t ended. 

A finger prods the corner of his mouth, tip pressed to tooth until he reluctantly opens. His gums itch, eyes widen, brow furrows.

“Not like you haven’t had it before,” she says. 

When Faith withdraws, brushing his lip with her pinky, he balls his fists. Her hand gleams with clotted blood.

His world is ash, but tastes like heaven. Tears fall unbidden with the irony.

A/N: For only_passenger. Okay, so, the premise of the fic sort of got away from me. I was going for that girl who does that thing and got instead that girl who doesn’t want to do that thing, but does when she finds the right person. Go figure.

Although it’s not explicitly stated, I intended this fic to take place shortly before Faith is called, which would be compliant with BtvS S2. She’s in high school, while Danny is a few years older, probably a drop out. This is, of course, only one possible back story for Faith’s home life, but one that I felt served the needs of this story. I also drew some inspiration from the Barenaked Ladies song “In the Car,” which you can listen to HERE.

I love FITB fics and, for me, this particular moment on the show left a wealth of unanswered questions. Where did Buffy and Angel meet? What did they do? How long was she gone? Why did she describe it as “intense?” I tried to address all of those unknowns in turn, as well as foreshadow and explore how she ended up falling into her affair with Spike. Step in to see the mystery unfold.

"School Hard" was the new episode being featured over atfantas_magoria this week. Their flash challenge was "Spike has fought two Slayers in the last century, and... he's killed them both." says Giles. Write a haiku poem for each of those incidents.

He is her cover of darkness, she thinks, as his chest lurches above her, holding a steady, swaying cadence. Back and forth, back and forth, he withdraws and returns, hypnotically consistent like a ticking metronome. Her shoulders brush the carpets, each rough push and rocking thrust a timed beat.

One leg thrown across his back, she is bowed double so that he can play her, striking the keys that will release her high notes. Together they pant a stuttering duet of sighs. Death is her gift, but music is his, she realizes, when he conducts them to a halting crescendo.
