How to write hot sex over at shared_wisdom
This week at shared_wisdom, nautibitz  has written and posted a wonderful and informative essay on
How To Write Smokin' Hot Smut. I highly recommend reading it. She makes some excellent points and, in typical Nauti style, dispenses some great advice with flare and humor. It was definately interesting for me to compare notes with her and see how her process and mine are similar and different.

I left a very long comment in response to her post and she was kind enough to write as detailed a reply back to me. Not to mention, she said this:

I'm so glad you came by to compare notes -- thanks for your enlightening input! Anyone looking for further insight on how to write erotica should reference your work, you're very good at it.

I peed in my pants a little! What an awesome endorsement. *is proud*

That *is* kinda pee-worthy. :P

It makes me feel a little bashful, too. I wasn't aware that she'd read my work.

*bows to your greatness*

*wishes it wasn't 3am already so she could read more of your stuff RIGHT NOW*

I need to go read that... sometime. *sigh*

Bah! I'm not all that great. No need to bow or prostrate or anything remotely resembling that. I'm just happy to keep you all entertained and thinking about these characters.

How was your birthday btw, hon? Did the cold clear up?

Hmm I really should make time to answer my comments on my LJ shouldn't I.. I've been sneaking in internet time and have been doing spot comments on my flist (haven't gone anywhere near my flist)..

My cold cleared up but my little boy was really bad and I got puked on for my birthday. ^_^ We had a nice lunch though. With cake!

I see the pee-worthiness, but this was really well deserved. Your writing is inspiring (even though I can't hope to ever write like you - I write what I consider to be soft-drink-stories).

*hugs*

Thanks so much. I guess I was so bowled over because I didn't know that Nauti has read my work. I remember that she left a brief comment on a fic once, but that's it. I have a lot of respect for her as a writer and, like many of us when we first came in to fandom, her fic was some of the first I read.

Your writing is inspiring
Can't ask for much more than that. If that's what I'm remembered for, I'll take it!

I can't hope to ever write like you - I write what I consider to be soft-drink-stories
See, this is no good. When writers start to compare themselves to others, it only brings disappointment. Embrace what makes you you. I could say the same about your writing. I can't write long, multi-chapter fics (no matter how hard I try )or humorous human AUs. We each do our own thing and have our particular strengths. So, chin up!

And what in the world is a soft-drink story!?
Sotiassddgr on October 6th, 2008 05:18 pm (UTC)
And what in the world is a soft-drink story!? -- LOL, sorry. Forgot other people don't live in my head. And how wrong did that sound? :-P OK, a soft-drink story is a light story. Not necessarily fluffy, but something more for passing time than for actually feeling things.

And don't get me wrong, I like writing that. I like people reviewing to say they giggled, and some times the story even manages to escape my control and become deeper than I went for and I find myself sniffling for having poured more of myself into it than I intended to. I don't mind writing such fics. I just meant that you inspire me to write more even though I'll never manage to write the way you do. You manage to convey such feeling with even a single line that I'm constantly in awe of you.

As for how Nauti's reply made you feel, I understand that completely. The first AU author I ever read, whose work I adored from the first paragraph, commented in my first story and offered to beta for me. I was floored!

LOL, I'd totally pee over that kind of comment. I might even do the "pee-pee in my pants" dance. That's awesome that Nauti's read your stuff, especially since she's too busy to read very much.

I'll take a compliment from a writer like her anyday. The only story I know she's read of mine was "Spectator Sport" because she left the very brief comment of "HOT!"

she's too busy to read very much.
Ah, I guess because she's writing a lot herself? I haven't kept up with her fic since she came back to fandom.

No, I think it's more RL stuff. Her updates have been a bit sporadic of late.

Thanks for linking her post. All really good advice (including your input/her response via comments) and worth bookmarking for future reference!

You're welcome! It's always great when a really well known writer takes the time to post about their process. We're all here to learn, so why not learn from each other!

Btw, Gillian Anderson looks way hot in that icon. Now Angel, Scully and Mulder can think about sex together!
