When Spuffy Fans Attack...

I'm in need of some advice. I was just messaged on Facebook by a girl that is a Spuffy fan. We are both members of a common interest Spuffy group, and I assume that's how she found me since I have nothing on my profile about actually writing Spuffy or fanfiction. She recc'd me Kallysten's work (whom I, and likely many of you, have read), said she is a reader/writer, and gave me her penname so I could check out her work. She's not on LJ (I looked), but is on FF.net. I was a bit dubious and had a feeling she was into fluffier fare than me. Sure enough, I read a few paragraphs into her fic and it was a dreadful AH. The writing was pretty cringe-worthy.

Now, I have absolutely no obligation to message her back, but it seems like the curteous thing to do. What exactly should I say to her? I don't really want to remark on her work, and given the fact that her profile lists her as a conservative Christian from the Midwest, I have a feeling she won't really be wild for my porntastic stories either.

What to do?

Can you just say that you are so pleased that she shared her fic with you, but that you doubt she would like yours as the two of you seem to enjoy very different things? Or something like that? Try to emphasize the differences in your tastes in fic, without mentioning that hers sucks. "I prefer much darker themes than you seem to prefer" or something? I think it's fair to say something about not reading AH - if that's true for you. (I'd have no trouble saying it. LOL)

Or, you could just not say anything unless she presses you about it - then you will have to tell her that you are into porntastic vampire fics. :)

Thanks for your advice. And, yeah, I wouldn't say it's a rule, but I hardly ever read AH. I have enough human drama in my own life, thank you very much. Don't need any of Elizabeth or William Pratt's high school hoopla *gag*

What slaymesoftly said :-) If she doesn't take the hint, you may just have to (and I can't believe that I'm even saying this as I type) ignore her. But I'd use that as a complete last resort.

Yes, we're all well bred here! Must mind our manners even if the fic is bad.

BTW, I totally loved your post about canon vs. fanon on BSV. I was laughing. You have such a sharp wit. Delightful. Season Sex, muhahaha.

I'd just say thanks for the rec and move on with my day. But then again, I make it a point to avoid FF.net like the plague. Waaaaaaay too many terrible stories on there, with too much sifting required to get to the few gems in the dross.

But, there's no need to comment on her work or mention yours. A simple "Thanks for the rec!" will suffice and will leave you free to escape her scary messaging power! :)

Thanks for your advice. That's pretty much what I said. As for FF.net, I haven't read anything there in ages, but it's where I started off. It was my haunt 2003-2005 and then I branched out into scowering LJ. Took me forever and a day to actually make an account though. I was an evil lurker for years. Muwahaha!
